who we are

The SmartS Club (Science meets art and Social sciences) is a group that meets to discuss and evaluate developments in todays cultures. Central to the group are meetings termed "streiten und speisen" at which theses are deliberately provocatively stated to stimulate committed disputations. To smooth ruffled feathers, excellent food is served...

Core disputants are:

Carsten Hucho, Paul Drude Institute for Solid State Electronics
born 28.8.1964 in Freiburg i.Br. Studied physics at FU-Berlin. After Postdoc-years in Milwaukee/Wisconsin, USA and Postdoc in Augsburg, Germany he became senior research scientist at Paul-Drude-Institut in Berlin, where he investigates collective phenomena. Since 2004 Carsten is Scientific-Administrative Coordinator of PDI and head of the department Technology and Transfer

Daniel Rapoport, Fraunhofer Einrichtung für Marine Biotechnologie
born 17.9.1971 in Berlin. Studied chemistry at TU Berlin. After acquiring his phD at Paul-Drude-Institute he worked as sound-engineer for three years. Today Daniel is cell-technologist at Fraunhofer EMB.

Jochen Büttner, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science

Tim Hucho, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, head of research group "Signaling in Pain and Mental Retardation"  and Professor at Universitätsklinik Köln, Klinik für Anästhesiologie und Operative Intensivmedizin
Experimentelle Anästhesiologie und Schmerzforschung
----
Frank Schippan, Bundesdruckerei
after obtaining his MPhil in Physics at Loughborough University in 1997 Frank got his PhD in Physics at Paul-Drude-Institute in Berlin 2000, working on the art of combining a semiconductor with a magnet, layer by layer. He then ventured on to work at Infineon Technologies, Dresden with an emphasis on ensuring high yield and excellent reliability of semiconductor devices for the real world.
Frank was then putting his energy and brilliance into gaining energy from brightness at First Solar, Frankfurt/O, and recently joined Bundesdruckerei (yes, they are printing money!) as always addicted to the mantra: The key is efficiency and stability. Let's make things happen!

Wolfert von Rahden
is editor of the Journal 'Gegenworte' of Berlin Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften where he serves as head of information and communication. His broad cultural and intellectual background is only matched by his eloquence
Ronald Hermann
is a born sociologist with training in physics and a particular sensitivity for the flavours of thoughts, words and - food. He not only knows how to encourage to ask the right questions - but he also knows to ask them right. It may come as a surprise that he recently moved to industry.
